VILLAGE BRIDE: Steve Isaak

Salenka’s father, Kenos, walks with me outside his rubble-ringed village.

“You made my daughter a woman last night,” he says, his gaze prismatic, piercing.

I nod, torn between joyous memories of Salenka’s animalistic tight-sex calescence, and Kenos’s intensity.

“It was inevitable,” he sighs.  “I’m glad it was you.  You are an outsider, an American, but you are respectful, even as you investigate our ‘relics.’’’

Kenos pauses.  “Last night, you also helped her fulfill her birth curse.  She’s what you’d call a werewolf, like her mother was.”

Kenos hesitates.

“Have you grown to love her these past months?”

I nod, radiant.

Kenos smiles.  “Marry her.  Take her away from here — today.  Those sheep were her first blood-kills, after she left your bed.  If she stays here, needless deaths, eventually hers, will occur.”

“How can I help her?  I’m just – “

“Love her,” he interrupts.  “She’s wild, but good hearted.  And she clearly loves you.  If you contain her during killing moons, as I did her mother, you both should be fine.”

“What happened to her mother?”

“She died during childbirth.” Kenos looks guilt-stricken.

“Will Salenka?”   My worry is evident.

“Not if you keep her secret,” he confesses.
