The Marradith Ryder Series, Bonus Story

Chicago, Illinois, 1978

Paul stands in the shadow of the L-Train, rattling above him like a cavalry of chained ghosts. It is night, summertime, but the heat still rises, trapped in the pavement, in between the ragged spirits of buildings, holding its breath in the stagnant air.

Clutching a paper bag to his chest, the bottle of liquor is the only thing that feels real. He closes his eyes, runs his tongue over his dry lips. The liquor does something to take the edge of his need away. But it is not enough.

Soon, he will need to feed again.

Taking the flesh of junkies and homeless men- other homeless men, as he now is– only makes his dreams worse, more vivid. With the feeding of their flesh he takes on their pains, their phobias, the twisted memories.  Some of those visions have remained in his head for so long that he could no longer be sure where the line between his own nightmares end and the reality of these other hungry, vacuous lives began.

The clanging of the train dies away, and except for the traffic, the street is nearly silent.

Paul has been traveling from town to town for months now. His Grandfather had been hard to deal with, but every now and again he thought of going back. Despite beatings and arguments, Leighton was blood. He would provide a safe home, meals without question, all the little luxuries that were lost to him now.

But if he went back, at what price? The old man would demand more from him now. And it already seemed there was so little of him left…

Paul had no fear of others. He’d heard the stories about the city, the anonymous deaths, the people that kill as easilly as speaking. But he was the predator.

Walking, still wearing a trenchcoat despite the weather, he found an all night diner and slipped inside. He asked for a cup of coffee. The waitress, weary and slow after a long shift, did not even ask him for money. She poured him a mug and retreated to the furthest corner of the room, sticking her nose in a book of crossword puzzles.

Paul was almost finished his coffee when the bell above the door chimed. Another customer.

A man in a suit and tie walked in. And he sat down in the booth across from Paul.

“I don’t know you,”  Paul said, “what do you want.”

The man’s lips twisted in a lopsided smile. “My name is Rafael Castillo,” he said in a low, rumbling voice. “I have been looking for you, Mr. Ryder.”

“If Leighton sent you,” he replied. “Tell him I’m not going back.”

“Quite the contrary,” the man replied. “I have no desire to bring you back to your Grandfather. I’m looking for men like you to stand against him, and his kind.”

The Marradith Ryder Series, The Art of Shadows: Part 25

“We’re supposed to believe that Pablo Vega has a son who is a Wolf?” Daria said.

They were in an abandoned warehouse. The young Wolf, phased back to his human form, sat bound to a chair. He looked from one girl to another, trying to decide what options were available to him. He couldn’t think of any.

“When you hunt Wolves,” he replied coolly, “Sometimes, mistakes happen.”

“Pablo didn’t tell the Sojourners,” Marradith said. “Why didn’t he bring you inot our ranks?”

“I didn’t tell him,” Alejandro said. “Why should I? My Dad was going to be ashamed, that much I knew for sure.  He couldn’t take knowing what happened to me. So, I left town, and I didn’t come back until after he died.”

“Alright then,” Marradith said. “Where is Rafael?”

“I’ll help you, but you have to promise that my Mom doesn’t get … punished over this,” Alejandro said.

“I can’t promise that. But his wife Fiona will,” Marradith assured him. “How deep is your Mother in this?”

“If they haven’t moved him, he’s in the basement of my Father’s restaurant.”

“She’s the one that his been holding him?”

“She’s been complicit, but the person who is pulling the strings is someone else.”

“Someone…who?” Daria stepped forward. Marradith moved as well, fearing that Daria might harm him before the man had time to speak further.

“I have seen her. I don’t know her. She’s not a Wolf. And she’s not vampire, either.”

“Do you know why she took him?”

“Because she wants the Others in this city to fear her. And making one of yours an example is one way to do it.”

Fiona’s line rang three times. Finally a sigh, and expectant breath. “Where are you, Marradith?”

“I could tell you, but I have news. We might know where Rafael is. Daria and I are headed there, and we’ll meet you. If there’s someone you can call to help, that would be good.”

“I know that,” Fiona snapped. “I don’t need to be told how to do my job. Just tell me where.”

Marradith rattled off the address. She could hear Fiona cussing in the background, talking to no one.

“Fi,” Marradith said. “Calm down.”

There was a click, and then emptiness. Fiona hung up on her.

Rafael woke from a thin sleep.

He heard the sound of the metal tapping on the stone wall.

Sitting up, he winced against the yellow light cast from a bulb above the doorway.

She had never turned on a light before, never allowed herself to be seen in more than a thin shadow. Smiling, she pursed her lips.

“Xia…why are you here?”

She touched his face with her fingertips. “I’m always around, don’t you know? It’s too bad that you made me go this far. A woman shouldn’t have to go to these lengths to get some attention .”

“What are you going to do with me?”

She smiled slowly. “We’ve had fun so far, haven’t we?”

Rafael shook his head. “Please, just let me go. I’ll do anything.”

She kneeled before him, so that her face was level with his. “Would you now? Would you do anything for me?”
